Meridian bridge was built in 1924. It was the first permanent highway crossing over the Missouri River in South Dakota. Linking U.S. Hwy 81 with Yankton, South Dakota, to Cedar Country, Nebraska, this unique double-deck bridge was designed for automobiles on the top, train traffic on the lower deck and a lift span that would lift up for the river traffic below.
